Adult Hepatology and Transplant
Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Ragama and Colombo North Teaching Hospital, Ragama is the pioneering center responsible for the development and advancement of Hepatology and liver transplantation in Sri Lanka. Prof Janaka de Silva initiated Gastroenterology (including Hepatology) as a specialized branch in Medicine in early 2000. Since then our unit has been the countries’ pioneering center in Hepatology and liver transplant. Our unit is the leading center for post-graduate training and is responsible for training 20 hepatologists who are currently serving in various parts of the country.
Many patients are either referred or transferred, from around the country, for specialized care of complex liver diseases. At present, we offer 24-hour endoscopic services to our patients, a busy clinic managing patients with cirrhosis that has a turnover of 800 patients monthly, a liver transplant clinic that manage pre- and post- transplant patients and a liver cancer clinic managing the largest cohort of liver cancer patients in the country. It is the first center to establish and conduct regular multi-disciplinary management clinics for hepatocellular cancer and liver transplantation.
Our unit is the leading center for research related to Hepatology in the country. Areas of research interest include fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver transplantation. The unit has produced many research articles published in reputed scientific journals and the research work carried out by the unit received numerous local and international awards
